Mousses and Ice Creams

Secret Ingredient Chocolate Mousse

For the second year in a row I have chosen to give up sweets for lent. Yes, I know it sounds very ambitious but I actually enjoy giving my sweet tooth a break and getting to appreciate savory snacks.

With that being said, for my last sweet treat before lent I chose to make this secret ingredient chocolate mousse. While the “secret” ingredient was only truly secret to one person, they still weren’t able to figure out what it was.

So any guesses on the secret ingredient???

It’s tofu! Yes, it sounds crazy but you can’t taste it at all and it gives the mousse the perfect consistency.

While the recipe calls for silken tofu, I didn’t have any and my mom and I were bold enough to try it with the extra firm tofu we already had. Yes. Extra Firm. It was a bit scary and I am kind of surprised our blender didn’t die or break in the process. We had to add about a ¼ cup of almond milk before it reached mousse consistency and then we were chillin’ (no pun intended).

I chose to top my mousse with a few raspberries since I expected it to be rich. However, I was very tempted to put banana and peanut butter on top. Or maybe some whipped cream and sprinkles. Just an idea!

I definitely want to try making this again with the right kind of tofu to see if I can notice a textural difference, but overall this mousse was the perfect sweet treat!
